The annual award is given to a listed company leader who performs outstandingly across their leadership and corporate governance while respecting the rights of shareholders.
NZSA Chairman John Hawkins said "The Beacon Award guidelines have specific guidance criteria. Don Braid is remarkable in that he meets all of these. His vision to make Mainfreight a 100-year company by developing a unique culture, is a trait that is far from universal in senior management”
The Beacon Award is judged against the following criteria –

Leadership and guidance on corporate practice.
Bravery in standing out from the crowd on issues that are controversial and taking stands against the trend on issues of governance, transparency, and individual conduct.
Conducting himself/herself in a manner that is a guide to others, ignoring self-interest, and putting the concerns of others to the fore.
Behaving in a manner that is respectful of the rights of others and treating the smallest shareholder with the respect of a business owner.
Working within the rules and best practice while ensuring fair and equitable outcomes for all.
Or such other acts as may, from time to time, be identified by the executive board of the New Zealand Shareholders’ Association.

Congratulations Don, thank you for striving to achieve nothing but the best for the Mainfreight Team and our shareholders worldwide

For his outstanding leadership and willingness to achieve nothing but the best for the business and our shareholders, Don Braid has been awarded the 2018 New Zealand Shareholders’ Association Beacon Award.

Mainfreight Taupo Official Opening | 3 October 2018

The opening ceremony of our new Mainfreight Taupo branch took place on Wednesday 26 September 2018. However, our team and customers in the Central North Island have had the benefit of our new facilities since December 2017.
Customers, team members and special guests from around the region gathered at our new site in Keehan Drive to witness this special occasion. They were treated to a special cultural performance from pupils of Tahaura School and Bruce Plested, Mainfreight Chairman and Mayor David Trewavas officially opened the site. They presented Nick Hyde, our Taupo Branch Manager and the team with their branch plaque mounted in the rock which is displayed at the front of the building. The rock represents the strength of our family and our culture and our long standing commitment to the people of the region.

We see the importance of having a presences in all parts of the country. We have been in Taupo for over 18 years and with the rapid growth in the Central North Island our facilities needed to adapt to this growth. We are always thinking about tomorrow and almost all our sites we build have room to expand as the region grows, Taupo is no exception.
Coming into our busy period we are looking forward to putting our bigger and more modern site to the test. To take advantage of our new facilities talk to our Taupo team today

Mainfreight Taupo has been operating since December 2017 customers, team members and special guest from around the Central North Island region gathered to celebrate its officially opening.

NZ Domestic Transport Earthquake Surcharge | 01 October 2018

Following the Kaikoura earthquake, KiwiRail took the opportunity to re-engineer its services, strategic direction and pricing. With significant disruption to traditional freight movement, KiwiRail increased their inter-island rates and we accordingly applied a ‘temporary’ surcharge to customers, to recover this cost while the coastal road and rail route were re-established.
In the time since the re-opening of SH1 and the Main North Line, we have held exhaustive negotiations with KiwiRail, the outcome being that costs for inter-island movements will remain at their current levels with reduced capacity. Pricing has also increased for other modes of transport, as the competitive pressure of historically low rail cost has been removed.
As a result of these market changes, from 1 October 2018 our existing disruption surcharge of 14.2% will be removed, to be replaced as follows:

All South Island intra-island movements in and out of the Marlborough region will have the surcharge removed altogether (13.7%). Due to limited rail services, this region is traditionally dominated by road linehaul requiring unimpeded access to SH1. We expect SH1 to be fully operational heading into Spring months.
All inter-island rates will increase by 9.8% (after the removal of the existing 14.2% surcharge)

Team from other branches in the region joined us to give back to a local school in need. We headed out to Rowley Avenue School with a truck load of donated goods for the school, BBQ trailer and other goodies for the kids.
The kids welcomed us with open arms when we arrived at school. “It’s a miracle”, one happy kid said. We put on a BBQ for lunch with apples, hot soup and drinks. Each kid also got a beanie to keep them warm through the cold. After lunch, we were surprised with wonderful cultural performance from the kids to thank us.
We all enjoyed our time together and to see the look on the kids face made it all worth it

Daily Freight Christchurch team spent a day at a local school. Two different types of owl sculptures were decorated: the big hoots designed, created by artists; owlets designed and created by school kids from all over the Auckland region.
Our Mobile and 2Home teams partnered with The Big Hoot to help transporting the big hoots and owlets to be decorated, installing owls on the trail once sculptures were ready to be displayed and uninstalling once the trail has ended. Our drivers felt like being a secret agent when it came to transporting and installing the owls at public spots as they had to make sure this was done throughout the night when no one is watching.
One of the owlets was brought to life by students from Bairds Mainfreight Primary School, a school we have been sponsoring for over 20 years.
Wedelivered the owlet to the school and followed the whole journey – the creation of ‘Jimmy’ with a theme of ‘colour my world with music’. Students took their inspiration from a beautiful book with paintings ‘Over the Rainbow’ by Eric Puybaret. The class chose a musical theme because they believe music can lift your emotions and wash away pain. Jimmy was displayed in Papatoetoe War Memorial Library.
This event has brought a lot of fun to friends, family, businesses and the community. People would take photos of the owls when they spotted on the street and families were out on owl hunting in the weekends.
Now the trail is coming to an end, the big hoot sculptures will be going on an auction to fundraise for this good cause

Have you spotted any owl sculptures in parks, public spaces, malls and libraries across Auckland yet?
